Everything You Need to Know About the Global Talent Visa Program

Australia introduced The ‘Global Talent Independent’ (GTI) program late 2019 which offers direct permanent residencies to talented individuals. From 2019-2020’s allocations of merely 5,000, the allocation quota for 2021-2022 has quite literally tripled to 15,000!

Want to know if you have the right talents for direct PR? In this article, we will tell you everything you need to know to assess your options for the GTI visa!

How does the GTI Program work?

The program is only available for applicants who are highly skilled in one of 7 eligible sectors:

  1. Agricultural Technology
  2. Space and Advanced Manufacturing
  3. Financial Technology
  4. Energy and Mining Technology
  5. Medical Technology
  6. Cyber Security
  7. Quantum Information, Advanced Digital, Data Science, and Information and Communication Technology (ICT)

You must meet the following 5 eligibility criteria for these sectors:

  1. Prove that you are internationally recognised with evidence of outstanding achievements in your field
  2. Are still prominent within your field
  3. Provide evidence that within your area of expertise, that you can be an asset for Australia
  4. Be able to become employed or established in your field without any difficulties
  5. Be nominated as a global talent by an Australian recognised organisation or individual in the same field as yourself

Also, there is a high income threshold by Fair Work of 153,600 AUD yearly. This means you must be able to earn at least this amount to be eligible. This figure is adjusted at the start of every financial year.

The Department will assess this based on 3 factors:

1. your current salary

2. future job offers in your field

3. the salary of your peers in the relevant field and occupation

If you meet all the relevant criteria above, you can then lodge an EOI to be invited by the department to apply for the visa itself.

“I’ve worked across some of the 7 sectors mentioned, does this mean I could be eligible?”

Unfortunately, no. Let’s say you work in the medical technology field but do not have specialised expertise in the medical technology field, then you would not be eligible to apply for the GTI program under the ‘medical technology’ sector.

The purpose of this visa is to find talented individuals who are capable of elevating Australia in these fields and therefore you must have relevant qualifications and expertise.

“What makes this visa so unique?”

This visa is outstanding because it lacks the criteria that most other visas have. Key things that stand out about the GTI visa are that there is no skills assessment required for your application, nor any English language test.

Above all, it seems the government is really invested in this visa program. With tripling the allocation quotas as well as making the program available for onshore and offshore applicants. Now is a great time to explore your options and see if you can apply directly for PR, without the lengthy process of other visas and become an Australian permanent resident sooner!

In summary, the GTI program is an amazing opportunity for applicants who are eligible and a visa program that seems like it could stick around for a while.
