What is the Prospective Marriage (Subclass 300) Visa?

The 300 Prospective Marriage visa allows you to enter Australia to marry your Australian partner within 9 months. It’s designed for people who are engaged to an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen.

Once granted, it gives you the ability to live in Australia while you prepare to apply for the 820 partner visa, followed later by the 801 permanent visa. For applicants outside Europe, North America or East Asia, it can be a safer and more reliable route than a visitor visa, especially where refusal rates are high.

Processing Times

As of June 2023, the Department of Home Affairs lists the following average processing times:

25% of applications:

processed in: 6 months

50% of applications:

processed in: 11 months

75% of applications:

processed in: 17 months

90% of applications:

processed in: 35 months

These figures are averages only. Processing can be quicker or slower depending on your application’s complexity and completeness.

Who Can Apply?

You must:

  • Be outside Australia when you apply
  • Have a partner who is an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen
  • Intend to marry within 9 months of the visa being granted
  • Have a registered marriage celebrant who is willing to issue a formal Notice of Intention to Marry
  • Provide evidence that the relationship and intention to marry are genuine
  • Complete a health assessment (in most cases, this includes a chest x-ray, blood tests and possibly an HIV test)
  • Provide police checks for all countries where you’ve lived for 12 months or more in the last 10 years

The Department assesses relationship claims against four key criteria. We’ll walk you through each one and help ensure your evidence meets the standard.

Yes! The 300 visa lets you work while you’re in Australia.

After your wedding, you’ll need to apply for a Partner visa (subclass 820/801) to stay in Australia permanently.

If you don’t marry in time, your 300 visa may be cancelled, and you might have to leave Australia. It’s important to follow the visa rules and timelines.
